3 Key Skills For Effective Studying

Looking for more support?
Prompts to initiate a conversation with your teen and to see if they would be ready for study support:

“Have you been taught study strategies in school?"
YES
“What does that look like?"
"As you get older your courses will have more work. What’s your plan to save time studying? What could you try?”
(Really try to listen to them)
"Do you think it's worth looking into some options to try and make things easier?"
YES
“Fair enough. Well, I’ve got an idea that might help. But I know this is something that just impacts you, not me, so whatever you decide is completely your choice.
You could chat with someone who teaches high school students study strategies, to see if it could make things easier. Learning how to study now might end up saving you a lot of time later, to have more time for other stuff you want to do. It's totally up to you though. You can decide if it would be something you’d want to try or not. Just an option. I trust you know what’s best for you.”
NO
"Do you know how to study?"
"Do you find you have enough time to study for tests right now? What do you think it will feel like when you have more to do in less time?"
(If they don't answer)
“I feel like it would be stressful. What do you think?"
"Fair enough. It can be hard to imagine it when you're not actually in that position right now."
NOT SURE
NO
"School has changed since my time so I'm not too sure. I just wanted to see what your thoughts were as you become more independent with these things."
(If they're not ready - you can check-in after their next test to see where they're at).
